New Marvel star, Jameela Jamil has been caught in a lot of controversies, mostly involving her polarizing activism. Though many agree with the actress' stance against cancel culture, she's hit a few nerves after calling out the likes of Khloé Kardashian for promoting "unrealistic" body standards on social media. As a result, trolls quickly bought the accusations that the Good Place alum was faking her illness. Here's the truth about her health issues.
Why Was Jameela Jamil Accused Of Faking Illness
In 2020, Jamil was accused of faking her illness. At the time, she tweeted that she was suffering from Munchausen Syndrome — "a psychological disorder where someone pretends to be ill or deliberately produces symptoms of illness in themselves," per NHS.
The Marry Me actress then defended herself, saying that her actual medical condition, Ehlers–Danlos Syndromes or EDS is an unnoticed illness that having it means "always having people doubt your illness and injuries because you look okay."
The controversy started when writer Tracey Morrissey released screenshots of Jamil's interviews and posts about her illnesses and food intolerances, going back as far as 2015.
One of the things that made Morrissey suspicious was the inconsistency in Jamil's bee story. In a 2015 interview with The Sun, she claimed that she and Mark Ronson were attacked by 500 bees. However, the writer noted that later on, Ronson said he didn't have the same recollection of the incident and that "one or two individual bees approached slowly."
Jameela Jamil's Rare Medical Condition
According to Mayo Clinic, EDS is "a group of inherited disorders that affect your connective tissues — primarily your skin, joints and blood vessel walls."
In an interview with Parade, Jamil opened up about living with the condition, saying: "It's severe lack of collagen, just to put in the most simple terms. It means complications with your bones, teeth, joints, skin and your vital organs. Basically, nothing works properly. You look like the absolute picture of health on the outside, and you're subjected to a lifetime of doubt cast on you by people who haven't lived with an invisible illness."
In a now-deleted tweet, Jamil also said that EDS' effect on her skin was used "against" her. "I have such severe eczema all over that my legs are covered in huge patches of pigment loss from scratching," she wrote. "I have a ton of stretch marks, and because I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, every time I cut, I scar. I refuse to have these normal human marks weaponized against me." It's why she's passionate about going against brands that edit out natural "flaws."
She once called out a skincare company, saying: "It clogs pores, can make some skin conditions worse and is based on a Photoshop ideal of a woman."
She later told Ability Magazine that she's proud to show off her blemishes as it could inspire younger women. "If I end up on the cover of magazines and people can show my stretch marks and my scars and my bendy joints, I want young people to feel that at least some of their dreams can come true, too. I want them to feel represented in me," she said. "Once people know that you're sick, they just write you off, and they just hope you survive rather than expect you to thrive."
What Marvel Movie Is Jameela Jamil In?
Nowadays, Jamil is certainly thriving as she recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as She-Hulk villain, Titania. Early in July, she acknowledged the hate she's received for her character's look. "Omg this photo,” Jamil wrote about the promotional photo. “Guys…I accept every ounce of shade here, but in defense of my excellent hair stylist, this is just my hair after a 14 hour stunt day in atlanta heat. Just after being upside down. She did a *great* job on the show I promise. I love her. Boobs look ok tho?"
In a recent interview, Jamil described her character as the "most annoying" villain in the MCU. "Titania stands out because I think she’s the most annoying of them, actually," she said. "I think she almost doesn't need to use her strength; she could just annoy you to death. And I think that is a superpower that we haven't really utilized enough. She's also very glamorous. I like the fact that she's a bit curvy, and I like the fact that she's completely unselfconscious. She's completely unselfconscious and so, so weird. We'll see."
The She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series premiered on Disney+ on August 17, 2022.
